News of drivers dying from starting the engine and sleeping in the car with the air conditioning on is frequently seen. Many people overlook this nearby danger, thinking “It’s okay, just a nap, I’ll wake up soon.” Sleeping while leaving the car engine running results in the body receiving carbon monoxide gas, which is gradually released from the exhaust pipe. Sometimes, if your body is very tired, you might accidentally fall into a deep sleep for many hours. Because if exposed for many hours, there is a risk of suffocation, which can lead to death.
Dr. Anucha Setthasathian, Secretary-General of the National Institute for Emergency Medicine (NIEMS), stated that the danger of starting a car and sleeping with the air conditioning on is a nearby threat that many people overlook. This is because running the air conditioning with the engine on and all four windows tightly closed causes the car's air conditioning system, which draws outside air into the car for circulation, to draw in exhaust fumes. Car exhaust contains large amounts of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide gases, which are harmful to the body.
According to data from the Hazardous Substances and Chemicals Information Center, the dangers of inhaling carbon monoxide gas include irritation, headaches, lethargy, dizziness, convulsions, difficulty breathing, unconsciousness, and abnormal heartbeats due to lower-than-normal hemoglobin levels, and it can affect the central nervous system to the point of death. When the car's air conditioning system draws in these gases while we are asleep, we will inhale them, affecting our bodies by gradually leading us to unconsciousness, which can eventually cause death.
Prevention Driving long distances continuously for many hours can cause drivers to feel fatigued or tired to the point of needing rest. Prevention: If you truly cannot continue and need a nap, you should stop at a gas station to find the safest parking spot with good ventilation and lower all four windows slightly. However, the best and safest method is to get enough rest before driving any distance, short or long. This is good and safe for both yourself and your fellow travelers.
Sleeping while leaving the car engine running results in the body receiving carbon monoxide gas, which is gradually released from the exhaust pipe and air conditioner fan. If exposed for longer than 5-6 hours, there is a risk of suffocation, which can lead to death.
